Prof. Marlies Hulscher is a scientific researcher and professor of quality of care for infectious and inflammatory diseases. She aims to improve quality of care for patients with infections and inflammatory diseases, in the hospital setting as well as in the public healthcare setting.

Central objective of the research is defining, measuring and improving quality of care for patients with infectious and inflammatory diseases, whereby the daily practice takes centre stage. In cooperation with professionals and scientists problems in current healthcare are observed, studied and improved.

Knowledge from the research will be transferred to PhD students, students and colleagues.

Research themes are (1) antibiotic use in the hospital; (2) prevention of infections in the hospital and in public healthcare; (3) fighting infectious diseases in the hospital and in public healthcare; and (4) clinical care of patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Apart from the above-mentioned scientific research, further developing research methodology for defining, measuring and improving are central points. For this purpose, frameworks, measuring instruments and methods for analysis are developed and tested. Important methodological spearheads in research are measuring barriers, developing improvement strategies and discovering determinants of success. So-called process evaluations play an important role in this process.
